I\u2019ve been in several exhibits in the Baltimore area, including two shows at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artscape.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Baltimore ArtScape<\/a>, two shows at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baltimorearts.org\/school-33-art-center-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">School 33 Art Center<\/a> and an exhibit at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdartplace.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Maryland Art Place<\/a>. Outside of Baltimore I\u2019ve exhibited in Annapolis, Maryland; Frederick, Maryland; Ohio; University of Memphis, Tennessee; two shows in Hudson, New York; and a show in Brooklyn, New York.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">I now live and work in Glen Burnie, MD.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">In the past 35 years my work has gone through many periods. In 1987, I had a solo exhibit in Baltimore of paintings and constructions using ink on wood.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\r\n<figure class=\"alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/artbymarkmiller.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/PD_0190-Medium-Web-view.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"209\" height=\"300\" class=\"wp-image-1081\" src=\"https:\/\/artbymarkmiller.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/PD_0190-Medium-Web-view-209x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/artbymarkmiller.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/PD_0190-Medium-Web-view-209x300.jpg 209w, https:\/\/artbymarkmiller.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/PD_0190-Medium-Web-view.jpg 335w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 209px) 100vw, 209px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">In 1990, I began a long series of abstract paintings resembling snakes. They were done using spray paint on bed sheets. By working in a series, I was free to paint spontaneously without having to focus on any narrative\u00a0 in my work. Out of this experience came a work called <em>&#8220;Water Snakes<\/em>&#8220;,\u00a0 exhibited at Maryland Art Place.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>In 1993, also constructed a room size installation at a warehouse gallery in south Baltimore. It was called &#8220;<em>Mr. Garden Meets Medicine Snake&#8221;. <\/em>It was about how my then recent diagnosis of having Bi-polar disorder met with\u00a0 my self-image as an emerging artist and amateur gardener. <a href=\"https:\/\/artbymarkmiller.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Ten.Days_.In_.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-571\" src=\"https:\/\/artbymarkmiller.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Ten.Days_.In_.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"129\" srcset=\"https:\/\/artbymarkmiller.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Ten.Days_.In_.jpg 650w, https:\/\/artbymarkmiller.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Ten.Days_.In_-300x194.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a>That same year I did another installation in Frederick, MD. titled &#8220;T<em>en Days in Bed<\/em>&#8221; .<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>In 1994, I went back to the image of the snake and combined it with childlike drawings. These took on a psychological aspect, having to do with a search for the inner workings of the psyche.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>In 1997, I did two more room installations. One was at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baltimorearts.org\/school-33-art-center-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">School 33 Art Center<\/a> in Baltimore and the other was at the University of Memphis.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\r\n<figure class=\"alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/artbymarkmiller.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Men-in-Power-Medium-Web-view.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1255\" src=\"https:\/\/artbymarkmiller.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Men-in-Power-294x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"204\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">When the events of 9\/11 took place, I began to look outside of myself into the workings of society and how it conflicted with my vision of a more peaceful existence. In 2004, I exhibited at School 33 Art Center. Due to a long depression I did very little artwork until 2008. It was then that I started the sociopolitical work.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\r\n<figure class=\"alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/artbymarkmiller.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Rattle-Snake-Twins-Reconciliation.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"224\" height=\"300\" class=\"wp-image-965\" src=\"https:\/\/artbymarkmiller.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/DSC_0605-Medium-Web-view-224x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/artbymarkmiller.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/DSC_0605-Medium-Web-view-224x300.jpg 224w, https:\/\/artbymarkmiller.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/DSC_0605-Medium-Web-view.jpg 358w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 224px) 100vw, 224px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>In 2011 through 2012, I worked on a series of paintings about the ongoing war and the atrocities taking place in The Democratic Republic of Congo. I studied how any person can turn into a monster, given the right circumstances.
